How to Design an Amigurumi: From a Sketch to Rounds
Every guide to designing amigurumi gives the same advice, and it is good advice: draw the character, divide the drawing into horizontal lines, treat each line as a round, then crochet it and see. If it comes out wrong, frog it and change the numbers.
What none of them say is how much of that frogging was avoidable. Designers describe ripping out the same head ten times before it looks right, making five versions of one small piece to get its proportion, and crocheting a complete draft doll before the real pattern gets written. Some of that is taste, and taste cannot be calculated. But a large part of it is one question, how wide will this come out, and that question is arithmetic.
This is the design process with the arithmetic taken out of the guessing and left where it belongs.
Designing Is Three Decisions
Strip away the character and every amigurumi design is the same three decisions, in this order.
- Which shapes. A head is a ball. An arm is a tube. A beak is a cone. A sole is a flat circle. Almost every creature you can name is a handful of these four, changed a little.
- How big each one is, in relation to the others. This is where proportion is decided, and where most remakes come from.
- Where they meet. Which piece attaches to which, in what order, at which round.
The first is imagination. The third is assembly, and it has its own article, because it is the one that only reveals itself at the end. The second one, the middle, is what this article is about, because it is the one people solve with a hook when they could solve it with a number.
Start With a Drawing That Has Numbers On It
Draw the character from the front and the side. You are not drawing to make art, you are drawing to make decisions, so it does not need to be good. It needs two things a decorative sketch usually lacks.
Horizontal lines. Draw a line across the drawing every place the shape changes: where the head stops widening, where the neck narrows, where the body reaches its widest point. Each of those lines is a round, and the ones in between are the rounds that get you there. This is the step every designer teaches, and it is genuinely the moment a drawing becomes a pattern.
Two measurements. Write down how tall the whole character should be, and how wide the head should be. Not because the rest cannot be decided later, but because those two numbers set the scale that everything else is judged against. A designer who skips this ends up deciding the size after the fact, by looking at a finished piece and thinking it is a bit large.
With lines and measurements on the page you have turned an open question into a list of shapes with sizes. Now the shapes.
The Four Shapes, and What Each One Is For
Amigurumi is built from a very short vocabulary, worked in a continuous spiral of single crochet.
- The ball. Heads, berries, snouts, paws. Grows to its widest round, holds, then mirrors the growth back down and closes.
- The tube. Arms, legs, bodies, necks. Grows to the width you want, then stops growing and simply repeats.
- The cone. Beaks, hats, horns, tails. Grows the whole way, but slowly.
- The flat circle. Bases, soles, ears, flat eyes. Grows the whole way, at exactly the rate that keeps it flat.
Those last two look similar in a pattern and behave completely differently in your hands, and the reason is the single most useful thing to understand about shaping.
The Growth Rate Is the Shape
Start with six stitches in a magic ring. To make a circle that lies flat, every round has to add six stitches: 6, 12, 18, 24 and on. That number is not a convention, it is the number of extra stitches the growing circumference needs in order to stay flat. Add exactly that many and the fabric keeps up with the space it has to fill.
Now change only that number, and the piece changes shape without any other instruction changing.
- Add fewer than six. The fabric cannot keep up with a flat circumference, so it lifts. Add three a round and you get a cone. Published cone schedules do exactly this.
- Add none. The circumference stops growing and the piece goes straight up. That is a tube.
- Add six for a while, then none, then take six away. Out, along, and back in again, which is a ball.
- Add more than six. There is more fabric than the circumference can hold and it ruffles, which is how a frill is made on purpose and how a base goes wrong by accident.
One number, four shapes. Once you see shaping this way, "how do I make a cone" stops being a pattern to look up and becomes a decision about a rate.
Where in the round the increases go is a separate question, and it matters for smoothness rather than for shape. Spacing them evenly and moving them round by round is what stops a circle turning into a hexagon: that is what charting your increases is for.
How Big It Comes Out Is One Multiplication
Here is the part that removes most of the frogging.
The width of a piece is decided entirely by the stitch count at its widest round. Not by the hook alone, not by how many rounds it has. If your widest round has 36 stitches and your tension gives 1.6 stitches per centimetre, that round is 36 divided by 1.6, which is 22.5 cm around. A circle 22.5 cm around is 7.2 cm across. That is the piece's width, decided before you crochet a single stitch of it.
Run it in the other direction and it becomes a design tool. You want a head 5 cm across. That is 15.7 cm around, which at the same tension is 25 stitches, so you need a widest round of about 24, which is four increase rounds from a ring of six.
Two consequences follow, and both are worth knowing before you start.
Sizes come in steps. Each increase round adds the ring count, so from a ring of six the widest round can be 24 or 30 but nothing in between. Asking for a size that falls between two steps means choosing which step to land on, or changing the ring count to move the steps.
Everything rests on your tension. Stitches per centimetre is personal, and amigurumi is worked tighter than the ball band suggests because the fabric has to be dense enough that stuffing cannot show through. Crochet a small piece in the round in your usual tension and count across ten centimetres once. That single number makes every calculation after it yours instead of somebody else's.

The Thing Nobody Tells You About Balls
The schedule almost every tutorial prints for a ball is six increase rounds, four or five plain rounds, then six decrease rounds. Work it and you get a lovely piece. You do not get a sphere.
Count it. Six increase rounds and six decrease rounds already give the piece its full height from top to bottom, so those plain rounds in the middle are extra height with no extra width. The result is slightly taller than it is wide, which is an egg.
That is often exactly what you want, since heads read better slightly tall and a true sphere can look oddly like a bead. But it should be a decision. If you want a ball that is genuinely round, the plain rounds in the middle are the dial: fewer of them, sometimes none at all, depending on your tension. If you want the egg, keep them, and know that you chose it.
This is the kind of thing that costs a designer two attempts to notice and thirty seconds to check.
Write It Down as You Go, Not Afterwards
Once the shapes and sizes exist, the pattern is mostly transcription, and it is much easier while the work is in front of you than from memory afterwards.
Write each round as you decide it, with its stitch count in parentheses, because that count is the check that tells a maker she is still on track. Keep a single set of abbreviations, write your repeats so the arithmetic inside them adds up, and give the pattern the sections buyers expect from the start rather than assembling a document at the end.
Name your pieces the same way everywhere. If a piece is a front leg in one section, it is not an arm three pages later. This costs nothing while you write and is unpleasant to fix once photos and an assembly section reference the old names.
Check the Shape Before You Crochet It
You now have a set of rounds that should build the shapes you drew. The traditional way to find out whether they do is to crochet them, which is also the expensive way, because the answer arrives after the work.

And because proportion is a relationship rather than a property, you can place the pieces on each other and look at the character rather than the parts. That is the judgement that otherwise waits until everything is finished.
What Still Needs a Hook
Being honest about the limit is what makes the rest trustworthy.
Arithmetic gives you width, height and the schedule that produces them. It does not give you how firmly you stuff, and a firmly stuffed ball reads larger and rounder than the fabric alone suggests. It does not know that your tension tightens when you are tired. It cannot tell you that the muzzle wants to be a little lower, or that the ears are charming at one angle and comic at another.
So the sample still gets made. What changes is what the sample is for. Instead of discovering the size, it confirms the feel, and instead of being the third attempt it is usually the first.
Then the Pieces Have to Agree
One more thing waits at the end, and it catches designers who did everything above correctly. A leg can be exactly the length you specified and still be wrong, because it is too long for this body. Proportion between pieces is not visible while you are working on any single one of them.

Why does my circle turn into a bowl or a ruffle?
Because the number of stitches you add per round does not match what a flat circumference needs. Add exactly the ring count each round and the circle stays flat. Add fewer and it cups, which is how a cone is made on purpose. Add more and it ruffles.
Do I need to swatch for amigurumi?
You need one number, not a formal swatch. Work a small piece in the round at your usual amigurumi tension and count how many stitches fall in ten centimetres. Every size calculation depends on it, and it is the difference between a pattern that finishes at the size you wrote and one that does not.
How long does it take to design an amigurumi pattern?
