Ask a designer what the slow part of making a pattern is and almost nobody says the crochet. The slow part is finding out.

You work out a shape, write the rounds, make the pieces, and they all look right on the table. Then you attach them, and the leg that was a perfectly good leg is too long for this body. Nothing is wrong with any single piece. The combination is wrong, and the combination is the one thing you could not look at until you had already paid for it in yarn and hours.

That is the part of designing that costs the most, and it is worth being honest about how much.

What Actually Goes Wrong Is Rarely a Piece

Piece-level mistakes are the ones designers already have tools for. A head that came out too big, or too oblong to read as a sphere, announces itself while you are still working on it, and a tape measure against a planned size catches most of the rest. Designers who teach the craft describe checking their progress with a tape measure as they go, precisely because a single shape can be judged on its own.

Proportion between pieces cannot. A leg is not too long in the abstract. It is too long for this body, which you will not have finished until later. Each piece on its own you can check as you write it; the pair you cannot. The same is true of a head against shoulders, an ear against a face, an arm against a body that came out a round taller than you planned. Every one of those judgements needs two finished pieces held together, and holding them together is the last thing that happens.

So the information you most need arrives last, which means it arrives after the work.

The Two Answers Designers Have Today

Neither of them is free.

The first is pinning. Every assembly tutorial says the same thing: pin the pieces on, put the body down on a flat surface, step back, look from all angles, check that both ears are level, and only then thread the needle. The advice is universal because it works, and because everyone has learned the hard way that fixing a placement before sewing beats pulling it out afterwards. But pinning is a physical simulation of the finished doll, made from pieces you have already crocheted. It answers the question after you have paid to ask it, and one tutorial admits what it is really like: the unpinning and re-pinning goes on for some time.

The second answer is more revealing. From a designer writing about her own process:

"Sometimes, it can help to sew all the pieces together to see the finished product, even if you know you aren't happy with the results yet. Seeing the whole design finished can give you a better idea of what you want to change on the next one."

Read that again, because it is the whole problem in two sentences. She finishes a doll she already knows is wrong. Not to sell it, not to photograph it, but to look at it, because there is no other way to see the combination. And what she learns is applied to the next one. The current doll is spent.

What Finding Out Costs

The numbers designers put on their own process are not small.

On remaking pieces, from a designer with a published catalogue: you might have to rip out the same body or head ten times before you get it right, and she says she has never designed an amigurumi without repeatedly starting over on at least a few body parts. Another describes making more than five versions of a single small piece on her first design before the proportion was right. A third says a full draft doll is normally crocheted before the final pattern is written, and that this stage takes a lot of frogging.

On the scale of the whole job, designers describing their process put a pattern at two weeks to a month and a half from idea to publication. And when a sample is commissioned rather than made in house, the going rate is around 25 cents a yard, which puts a 350 yard project near 90 dollars in labour alone. That is before the yarn itself, which a remade doll spends twice.

Put those together and a remade doll is not an inconvenience. It is days, and sometimes it is money.

There is also a market answer to the question of whether this hurts. Several designers now sell paid courses whose entire promise is removing the guesswork from shaping and sizing, one of them explicitly offering to replace trial and error with formulas. People do not pay for a solution to a problem they do not have.

The Joining Method Sets the Price of Changing Your Mind

Here is where the choice of join stops being a technique question and becomes an economic one. The two main methods differ in exactly one respect that matters here: how expensive it is to change your mind after the join is made.

Sewn: the decision stays open

Sewn assembly means every piece is finished separately and the joins happen at the end with a yarn needle. The real advantage is not the seam. It is that placement stays adjustable until the needle goes through. You can pin a leg, stand the piece up, see it lean, move it half a round, and only then commit. If you are wrong, you unpick a seam.

That flexibility is not sloppiness, it is necessary, because no two makers produce the same fabric. Two people can work the same rounds with the same hook and yarn and end up with pieces that differ by millimetres. A body that came out slightly taller wants its arms slightly lower, and the person holding that body is better placed to decide than any number in the pattern.

Sewing also puts no limits on where a piece can go: across several rounds, at an angle, on a curve, half on the body and half on the head. Anything you can hold in place, you can sew.

Worth knowing that sewing is not one technique. A seamless join smooths the transition so you can barely tell where one piece ends and the next begins; June Gilbank's method places the stitches slightly further out onto the body than feels natural, so the piece stretches a little as each stitch is pulled tight. A clean edge join does the opposite deliberately, leaving a defined edge with invisible stitching, which is what you want between contrasting colours such as a beak on a face. If your pattern joins two colours and says neither, half your buyers will smooth it and get a smudged colour line. It belongs with the rest of your stated conventions, not left to taste.

What sewing costs: it is a separate skill and the step beginners dread. Holding a piece steady is genuinely awkward, which is why experienced makers pin or use locking stitch markers and tack the piece loosely before committing. Alignment is judged by eye, which is where ears at two different heights come from. The usual craft advice is a thin steel tapestry needle so the stitches are not distorted, tight stitches taken twice around the join, and enough yarn left inside to re-sew years later.

Crocheted on: the decision is spent when you make it

Crocheted on, usually sold as no-sew, means the piece is joined into stitches that are still live while the work is on the hook. The join is not a seam, it is fabric.

Mechanically, the limb is crocheted first, before the body it attaches to, even if the pattern lists it afterwards. Its opening is pinched flat, and when the body reaches the round where the limb belongs you work single crochet through both layers together, then carry on around the round.

The advantages are real. The join is continuous with both pieces, so there is no seam thread that can work loose. There is no finishing session at the end: when the last stitch is worked, the doll is done. And it removes the step that stops people from finishing, which is why no-sew patterns sell so well to beginners and why designers working with chenille reach for it.

But the cost is exactly the thing this article is about. The position is locked at the moment it is worked. There is no pinning, no standing the doll up to look, no moving it half a round. If it is wrong, the fix is to frog back to that round, which means undoing the body you built on top of it. You have made the placement decision at the earliest possible moment, with the least possible information, and paid for it with the most work.

Three more things to know before choosing it. The name oversells: most no-sew patterns are really low-sew, since eyes, noses and tails still get attached by hand. It is not automatically easier, because working into live stitches means managing the working loop and the tension of two pieces at once, and some designers who teach both recommend beginners start with sewn patterns. And there is a hard structural limit: crocheting on works when the piece meets the parent along a single round. Anything crossing rounds, sitting at an angle, or landing in the middle of a smooth surface has to be sewn.

A third route, briefly

A piece can also be worked onto the surface of a finished piece, crocheting into the fabric rather than into a live edge. It sits between the other two: the parent is already finished, as with sewing, but the join is crocheted fabric, and it can be placed on a surface rather than only along a round. It asks for the most crochet confidence of the three, which is why it turns up more in designers' own work than in patterns for beginners.

Side by side, by what it costs to change

None of this makes one method better. It makes them different bets. Sewing buys you the right to decide late, and charges you a seam. Crocheting on buys you a stronger join and a finished doll, and charges you the right to change your mind.

Placement Resolves Itself in Order

There is a reason experienced designers write sewn placement loosely, and it is not carelessness. Assembly is a chain, and each join fixes the reference for the next one.

Attach the legs and you have decided where the front is. Nothing on a plain tube says which side the face goes on until something decides it, and the legs usually do. This is also why the most common no-sew construction starts at the legs: two legs are worked, joined to each other, and the body continues upward from them, building the front into the fabric before the body exists. Once the front is decided, the arms have a meaning, because they go on the sides of a front that now physically exists. The ears go on the head, then the eyes are placed by the ears, and the nose by the eyes.

None of those steps needs an absolute stitch number, because each has its reference in front of the maker by the time she reaches it. Look at how the technique is taught. June Gilbank's method for attaching legs to a standing animal is to sew part of the join, stop, check whether the pair sits directly under the body, and if not, pull the stitches out, move the legs and try again, then stand the finished animal up and confirm all four feet touch the ground at once. There are no stitch numbers anywhere in it. The test is the doll.

Which is also why showing assembly well matters so much in the finished pattern: your customer is running the same build-look-redo loop you did, with less information. A photo at the right step is her version of standing the doll up and looking.

Which is the same problem again, in miniature: the answer is only available at the end, so the method is to build, look, and redo.

What This Means for the Pattern You Write

The two methods need opposite amounts of precision, and it follows directly from when the decision gets made.

For a crocheted on piece, be exact. The maker is at a specific round with live stitches and no way to adjust afterwards, so she needs the round, the stitch she starts at, how many stitches the join takes, and the fact that the limb must be made first. That instruction belongs inside the piece instructions, at the point in the work where it happens. There is no later.

For a sewn piece, be exact about the round and deliberately open about the rest. The round an arm sits on is a structural fact of your design and does not change with tension. An absolute stitch number usually is not, because by then the maker has a real doll with its own proportions in her hands. Say how many stitches the seam covers with the same care you would give a repeat, say which join you mean if the colours differ, and describe the position against something she can see: level with the ears, centred over the leg, the same height on both sides.

Give the order of the joins, say which join sets the front, and say what pose the doll should end in, since sitting and standing want their legs in different places. The assembly section has a place in the pattern like any other. Then leave the last few millimetres to the person holding the doll. She has information you do not.

Seeing the Combination Before You Pay for It

Everything above is a workaround for one missing thing: a way to look at the pieces together before they exist.

The Other Way to See It Without Making It Again

There is a second version of the same problem that a preview cannot touch. Your design does not exist once. It exists in every tension it gets made at, and the article started there: two makers, same rounds, same hook, different fabric by a few millimetres. You only ever see your own tension.

That is what testers are for, and it is worth being precise about which question they answer. A preview tells you whether the shapes you wrote go together. A tester tells you whether the words you wrote produce the doll you meant, in hands that are not yours, at a tension that is not yours. Several testers give you the one thing no amount of care on your own doll can: your design seen across a spread of real fabric, before a paying customer is the one discovering it.

The practical version: a tester call run properly gets you finished dolls from several makers and their notes on the places they hesitated, and it costs you no crochet. If you have never run one, how to write the call matters more than where you post it.

Watch for one question in particular. If a tester has to ask whether a piece is sewn on or worked in, that piece is missing its method, and every buyer will reach the same gap in the same place.

Common Questions

Why do amigurumi proportions look wrong only after assembly?

Because a single piece can be judged on its own with a tape measure, but proportion is a relationship between two finished pieces. A leg is never too long by itself, only too long for a particular body, and that comparison is not available until both pieces exist and are held together.

How many attempts does designing an amigurumi take?

More than most people expect. Designers who write about their process describe ripping out the same head or body up to ten times, making five or more versions of one small piece to get its proportion right, and crocheting at least one complete draft doll before writing the final pattern. Two weeks to a month and a half from idea to publication is a common range.

Is no-sew amigurumi easier than sewing?

Not automatically. It removes the finishing step, which many makers dislike, but working a piece into live stitches asks for loop and tension control and must follow the pattern's order exactly. Some designers who teach both recommend beginners start with sewn patterns. What no-sew reliably removes is the seam, not the difficulty.

Is no-sew really no sewing at all?

Rarely. Limbs can be worked in, but eyes, noses, tails and decorative pieces are usually still attached by hand, so most no-sew patterns are more accurately low-sew.

Which method should I choose for my design?

Sewn if the pieces sit at angles, if placement needs judging by eye, or if the design is still being refined, since you keep the right to change your mind. Crocheted on if the joins fall along a round, if the pattern is for beginners, or if the design is one you have made several times and are confident about. Many patterns use both; say which method each piece uses at the top of its instructions.

Can pattern testers catch proportion problems?

They catch a different thing, and it is the thing you cannot see alone: whether your written instructions produce the doll you intended in someone else's hands and at someone else's tension. A preview shows you your own design; testers show you your design as other people make it. Both come before the customer does.

Should a pattern give the exact stitch to attach a piece to?

For a crocheted on piece, yes, because it is worked at a fixed point and cannot be moved. For a sewn piece, the round and what it lines up with are usually more useful than an absolute stitch number, since the maker is holding a doll with its own tension and proportions.
